Exhibition Catalogue

Artist Info

Marlborough Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition of Paula Rego El primo Basilio y otras historias (Cousin Bazilio and other stories), from 20 October to 21 November 2015.

This will be Rego’s first show at Marlborough Madrid since the Abortion series, shown in 1999. Her last major exhibition in the city was a retrospective at the Museo Nacional de Arte Reina Sofia in 2007 that later travelled to Washington D.C.

In this new series of seven pastels on paper, a technique that Rego has been exploring over the past 20 years, the artist references the novel El primo Basilio (Cousin Basilio) by Eca de Queiros, the most renowned Portuguese writers of 19th century and one of her favourite novelists too. The novel was published in 1878 with great success as well as scandal due to its frank description of sex and sexual desire.

20 October – 21 November 2015
