Diango Hernández: Theoretical Beach, Museum Morsbroich, Leverkusen

Artist Info

Under the programmatic title of “Theoretical Beach”, Museum Morsbroich presents a first major solo exhibition of the Cuban artist Diango Hernández. His works originates from reflections on political, social, cultural and social realities that relate – to a certain extent – to the artist’s own biography.

Working in close cooperation with the institution,Hernánde transforms the castle that hosts the museum into the scenario of  an “imaginary, theoretical beach”. Wave paintings that stretch over several exhibition spaces, transform the central building of the castle in a kind of aquarium. While interfering with the existing architecture, the artist creates walkable installations playfully awaken with sand, shell and exotic fruits, suggesting the atmosphere of a tropical beach.
