Dale Chihuly is at the forefront of the development of glass as a fine art. Born in Tacoma, Washington, in 1941, his involvement with the material began while studying interior design at the University of Washington. He enrolled in the first glassblowing course in America at the University of Wisconsin, developing his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he explored environmental works using neon, argon and blown glass and went on to establish the glass program.
