Celia Paul

My Mother Looking Up

1997

oil on canvas

152 x 137 cm.

Celia Paul’s subjects are often centred on her family, including depictions of her mother and sisters. The solitary figures often sit or stand in undecorated surroundings, sometimes in close up, sometimes dwarfed by emptiness, with quiet demeanour, melancholy, lost in contemplation – the expression on their faces echoes intense but silent emotion.
