Biography

Born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province, China. Graduated from the Shanghai Training School of Art in 1965. With the Cultural Revolution underway, his style of Social Realist painting of heroic subjects – the Chairman, soldiers, recent historic events in Communist mythology – won him support and patronage from the state. After Mao’s death his style and subject matter moved towards a softer style of realism, with an eye on Western art. As one of the first Chinese artists to be allowed out to study in the West, he went to New York in 1980, and enrolled at Hunter College. His first exhibition there, at the Hammer Galleries, proved a sell-out. He returned to China in 1990.
