Born in Portsmouth in 1951. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art (1970-74) and at the Chelsea School of Art (1974-75). He has been a lecturer at several of London’s art schools, and in particular, also at Brighton up till 1984, whose School of Art has since been incorporated into the university. Initially his work was seen as almost abstract, although he has explained that behind appearances, there is always an element of the visual world. From these quasi-abstract paintings where the tone and warmth of colour predominated, gradually recognisable motifs began to emerge.

Some years ago, he explained: ‘What I am trying to do is to allow the painting, in a sense, to break open and show the images that we want to be there and that the material of painting somehow wants to be there. In other words, to treat the painting as if it were alive’. First, then what seemed an recurrent abstract circular shape in his work began to take the form of a disc, and to be joined by the suggestion of latent energy and dynamic movement in the form of the horse and the wing, stationary and still in some compositions, prancing and winging into space in others.

In the 1908’s his work was included in a number of major international survey exhibitions such as ‘Zeitgeist’ in Berlin (1982), the ‘Avantgarde in the Eighties’ in Los Angeles (1987) and, more recently, “Contemporary Voices’ at MoMA, New York (2005). In the late 80’s he had begun to investigate printmaking, starting with monotypes, which would lead him on to produce an impressive series of fifty etchings in 1990.

In 1996 he initiated a series of small sculptures in bronze, which have since progressed into monumental public sculptures incorporating his central motifs of horse and discs. Besides a studio practice which now encompasses painting and drawing, printmaking and sculpture, he has also been a Trustee of the Tate Gallery, the National Gallery and the Dulwich Picture Gallery, and was elected President of the Royal Academy of Art, London, in 2011.
